Description:

The DuPont Waynesboro plant manufactures BCF Nylon and Lycra®. (Permasep® was phased out in May of 2001, but may restart in the future.) These processes generate a wastewater stream that requires treatment prior to discharge to the South River. The primary waste constituents from these processes are hexamethlyenediamine (HMD) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc). The purpose of operating the Wastewater Treatment system is to maintain conditions for optimum biological treatment performance. This is done by monitoring key parameters of system health including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, carbon and nitrogen loading and removal, hydraulic loading, effluent quality, solids retention time (SRT), and responding properly to any out-of-limits conditions. The Wastewater Treatment plant (WWTP) and pump system is a two stage, nitrifying/denitrifying activated sludge system with extended aeration. The system can be divided into four general categories: · Equalization · Anoxic treatment · Aeration · Spill Diversion/Retention All discharges from the site are managed to meet the requirements of VPDES permit number VA0001260.
